The Star of India is the world's oldest active ship. She began her life on the stocks at Ramsey Shipyard in 1863 with the name Euterpe, after the Greek goddess of music. She was sold to American owners in 1898, and commenced sailing from Oakland, California to the Bering Sea. The owners, the Alaska Packers, changed her name in 1906, to The Star of India.
In 1976, The Star of India was fully restored and put to sea for the first time in fifty years and now sails at least once a year making her the oldest active ship of any kind in the world. She now lives in San Diego at the Maritime Museum who have a worldwide reputation for excellence in restoring, maintaining and operating historic vessels with one of the world’s finest collections of historic ships.
